Lesson Information

What is Suzuki?

The Suzuki Method was created by Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki in the mid-20th century, who firmly believed that any child could learn to play the violin. Dr. Suzuki taught music the same way children learn to speak - imitation, repetition and positive reinforcement. This teaching approach has been adapted to many instruments and now includes trumpet!

How is Suzuki different than traditional lessons?

In traditional trumpet lessons, students will learn their instrument at the same time they learn to read music. In Suzuki lessons, students will first learn to play their instrument comfortably and with ease, at which point they will learn to read music. Any new technique or piece of music is taught in small, achievable steps, so the student always feels like the material is within reach.

Every student under the age of 12 will be accompanied to lessons by a designated “Practice Parent”. This person will take notes during the lesson and facilitate practicing at home. The student, teacher and parent all work together to create the best learning experience.

What is an appropriate age to start?

Children can begin lessons as early as 4 years old - but it’s never too late to start!

What is the parent’s role?

Parents of children under 12 are expected to attend all lessons and help with practicing at home. Parents of children under 7 will learn to play the trumpet alongside their child.

What is the cost of starting lessons?

All beginners will start with 30 minute lessons which are $30. Longer lessons are also available at $45/45 min and $60/60 min.

There will be additional startup costs for instruments and materials which can range in price. Please use the contact form if you would like more detailed information.

Do you offer group classes?

Yes! Group classes are organized throughout the year at an additional fee. These are excellent opportunities for students to get to know one another and develop their confidence performing with others.
